Stress is an inescapable part of modern life. It doesn’t matter where we look today, there are constant signs of people reacting and behaving from a place of stress. Whether it’s work related stress, an inability to cope with the pressures of personal issues, money worries, or even stress derived from events we are looking forward to such as weddings or moving house, it can negatively affect mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
Stress can be a good thing; in times past, being under stress helped our caveman ancestors survive. However, in this day and age we are very unlikely to be under imminent threat of being eaten by some wild beast and, unlike our ancestors, we often store up the adrenaline created by stress. This can cause a range of disorders that potentially make even just getting through the day seem almost impossible.
Even things we do to unwind can add to our stress levels. Many people chose to play computer games to unwind but the need to remain alert and competitive can create a different kind of stress. Rushing to social engagements that we are supposed to enjoy can also become stressful, particularly if we are running late or the commute is a nightmare.
